Installing
How do I switch
between the electronic license version and the hardware
key? |
STAR.LOG,
Log Manager
Versions: 6.3.0+
Updated: 2012-04-09 |
Version 6 of STAR.LOG
can be used with either a hardware key or an electronic
license.
As of Version 6.3.0, there is no longer a need to uninstall
and reinstall your WellSight product in order to switch
between using a hardware key and using an electronic license.
STAR.LOG programs and Log Manager automatically detect
which type of license you are using.
This flexibility can be very useful in circumstances like
the following:
- You have evaluated STRIP.LOG by downloading and running
the free trial period, which uses an electronic license.
Now you want to purchase STRIP.LOG to run off a hardware key. Once your hardware key arrives, simply connect
it to your computer and STRIP.LOG automatically finds
the hardware key the next time it runs (or after your
trial period ends).
- You use a hardware key for MUD.LOG, but when you arrive
at the well site you realize that you don't have it with
you. No problem. If you haven't already used the free
trial period on your computer, it will start automatically
when you run MUD.LOG without the hardware key present.
If you have already used the free trial, contact
WellSight to arrange an emergency electronic license to get you
through the job.
|
Can I install
both V5 and V6 on my computer? |
STAR.LOG 5,
6
2014-05-05 |
Yes. Version 5 and
6 install in separate locations such that they can both
be installed at once. Desktop icons for Version 6 identify
their version (e.g. "STRIP.LOG 6.5.1"). On
the Start Menu, Version 5 programs appear in a program
menu called "WellSight Systems V5",
and Version 6 programs appear in a program menu called
"WellSight Systems V6".
|
Can I install WellSight products on a Virtual
Machine?
|
STAR.LOG
6
Log Manager 6
Log Viewer
Updated: 2009-10-01
|
STAR.LOG programs and the Log Manager can be used on Virtual
Machines (VMs), but only when a hardware key is used. This
applies
to both stand-alone and network server installations. Network
client installations can also be on VMs since they do not
require a local license.
When launching your WellSight product, if you receive
a message that a Virtual Machine has been detected, check
the following:
- For a stand-alone installation, ensure that the black
USB hardware key is connected and mapped to
the VM.
- For a network server installation, ensure that the
red USB network hardware key is connected and mapped to
the VM.
- For a network client installation, ensure that the
client can access the license server over the network.
The
Log Viewer also works in a VM as it does not require
a license. The only configuration that does not run in a VM is
a stand-alone installation that tries to use an electronic
license. To use an electronic
license (including a free trial license) you must install
your WellSight product directly on a real computer
running
a supported version of Windows.

How do I create

and Features, in Windows Vista and newer).
- Find the entry for your product, e.g. WellSight Systems
STAR.LOG 6, and click Change/Remove.
- When prompted to Modify, Repair, or Remove, choose Repair.
- Click Next and complete the setup wizard.
|
How do I configure
Windows to automatically launch a WellSight program when
I double-click on a strip log file? |
All Programs
2014-05-05 |
WellSight programs
automatically configure Windows to launch the appropriate
program when you double-click on a strip log file. This
is done when you install the program by associating the
log file name extension (e.g. .SLG, .HL6) with the program.
However, this association can be changed on you, e.g., by
other software being installed.
To re-establish the file name extension associations for
a WellSight program:
- In the Control Panel, run Add/Remove Programs (Programs
and Features, in Windows Vista and newer).
- Find the WellSight program, e.g. "WellSight Systems
STAR.LOG 6", and click Change/Remove.
- When prompted to Modify, Repair, or Remove, choose Repair.
Sometimes the default associations are not what you want.
For example, you may want your vertical log files to be
opened by MUD.LOG, but any horizontal log files should be
opened by the WellSight Log Viewer. To change the default
file name extension associations:
- Right-click on a log file and select Open With >
Choose Program.
- Select or Browse to the WellSight program file, e.g.
"C:\Program Files\WellSight Systems\Log Viewer 6\Viewer.exe".
- Check "Always Use the Selected Program" and
click OK.

|
WellSight distributes setup.exe installation programs
that contain MSI database files. To extract the MSI file,
simply install the product using the setup.exe. As part
of the installation, the MSI file will be extracted to
the default location for your version of Windows. E.g.,
for Windows XP, "C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Local
Settings\Application Data\Downloaded Installations".

Can I run
WellSight programs on a Mac or Linux? |
All Products
All Versions
Updated: 2009-04-24 |
Yes. A number of
our customers have reported that they have successfully
used our products on operating systems other than the supported
versions of Windows. Techniques included:
- Dual-boot systems with more than one operating system
installed. Newer Intel duo Macs support this.
- Windows Emulators.
- Virtual Machines, e.g. Parallels for Max OS X.
For STAR.LOG programs, install the hardware key version
and configure the Windows emulator or VM to access its
USB port.
Note: You cannot
use an electronic
license on virtual machines.

Installation
Problems |
Products: All
Versions: All
Updated: 2013-01-17 |
If you encounter
error messages while downloading and installing WellSight
Systems products, try the following steps:
- Restart your computer.
- Login as a user with administrator privileges.
- Check the Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features, in Windows Vista and newer) applet for any WellSight Systems
entries and uninstall them.
- Download the installation program (e.g. starlog_61.exe)
to your desktop and run it from there.
Error messages may be displayed by the Microsoft
WIndows Installer (MSI). For example,
Error 1722: There is a problem with this
windows installer package.
Error 1931. The Windows Installer server
cannot update the system file C:\... (some Windows file)
"Unable to start hardlock service"
If this happens, try the following steps:
- Try temporarily disabling your anti-virus software and
try installing again. Warning: your computer will be vulnerable
to viruses until you re-enable your anti-virus software.
You are advised to avoid using the Internet or disable
your Internet connection while your anti-virus software
is disabled.
- You can sometimes press Cancel and the installation
will complete anyway. However, afterward, you may not
be able to run the WellSight program you just installed.
Instead, you may receive a message telling you that the
HASP driver is not installed. If this happens, you may
be able to fix the problem by re-installing the HASP driver.
See LicenseTrouble-Shooting.
If the problem continues, submit a Problem
Report Form, being sure to include the following information:
- The exact error message(s) displayed.
- When the error message(s) are displayed. E.g. during
the download, during the installation, or when you run
the program.
- The file size (in bytes) of the downloaded installation
program.
- The exact, numerical Windows version number and Service
Pack level (found under Control
Panel > System).

I Cannot Un-install
a WellSight Product |
All Products
All Versions
2006-02-10 |
"When I try to
un-install a WellSight product using the Add/Remove Programs
applet in the Control Panel, I get an error message saying
that it cannot find an MSI file. " First, Restart
Windows and try installing the product again from the setup
program. You may be prompted to Modify/Remove/Repair the
installation. Choose Remove. This should un-install the
WellSight product.
If this doesn't work, then you may try the following advanced
procedure. Caution: The following procedure involves
editing the Windows Registry database. You are
strongly advised to consult with a Windows systems expert
to perform this procedure. In addition, you are strongly
advised to backup the Windows Registry before this procedure
is carried out.
- Backup the Windows system registry. Consult a Windows
systems expert or the Windows on-line help for details.
If you are not able to do this, do not proceed with this
procedure.
- Note the full name of the product you want to uninstall.
It is the name that appears in the Add/Remove Programs
applet. It will also appear in the title bar of each window
when you run the setup program and in error messages related
to installing and uninstalling the product. Example full
product names are:
- WellSight Log Viewer
- WellSight Log Viewer V5
- WellSight Log Viewer 6
- WellSight Systems
- WellSight Systems V5
- WellSight Systems STAR.LOG 6
- Run the windows registry editor:
- Click the Start Button
- Choose Run
- Type: regedit and click OK.
- Select Edit Menu > Find and search for the full product
name
- Depending on the version of Windows and the WellSight
product and version, you may find several different
instances of the full product name
- Find the instance that is in one of the following
locations:
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software]Microsoft\Installer\Products
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\classes\installer\products
- Delete the entire Node that contains the Key with
the full product name as its value. This Node's label
is a long alpha-numeric string and it is located directly
under the Products node.
- Re-run the setup program for the WellSight product.

Which license
is used if I have more than one? |
STAR.LOG, Log
Manager
Versions: 6.4.0+
Updated: 2012-01-17 |
WellSight products
look for a license in this order:
- An active hardware key (HASP-HL) license is used if
present
- Then it uses an active Electronic License (HASP-SL)
if present
- If a trial license is available it uses the trial license
(note the software will prompt you before activating an
unused trial license).
- Finally, if none of the above license types can be found
locally on your computer, then the software searches for
a network license.
You can check which license is being used by a WellSight
program by selecting Help > About. To see all available
and expired licenses, choose Help > Renew License, then
click Show all Licenses. |

|
How
to ensure the hardware key is properly connected
- Ensure you have a black HASP SRM hardware
key
- Connect your hardware key to a USB port on your computer
- Ensure the hardware key's internal red light is lit.
This could take a few seconds - up to a minute.
- When connecting a WellSight hardware key to your computer
for the first time, you may see Windows messages informing
you that new hardware has been detected. This is normal,
unless you see a message that says
the hardware could not be installed. In that case, re-install
the HASP driver.
- If the hardware key's red light does not come on, try
a different USB port
- Ensure that the USB port works by testing it with another
USB device (e.g. a memory stick)
- If the hardware key is connected to a USB hub, try using
a port directly on your computer
- Run Renew License and watch
for a message indicating that the key's battery is low,
in which case it will need to be replaced.
- If the problem persists, try connecting the hardware
key to another computer with the WellSight program installed
on it
- If the hardware key works on another computer, try re-installing
the HASP driver on the original computer
- For Virtual Machines, ensure the hardware key's USB
port is mapped to the VM
- If the light on the hardware key doesn't light up on
a known working USB port after re-installing the HASP
driver, it may be defective. Contact WellSight

Updating Software
How do I get
WellSight product updates? |
All Products
All Versions
Updated: 2012-04-09 |
Major
Upgrades
An upgrade from a version earlier than 6.0
is a major upgrade.
To perform a major upgrade:
- Backup any strip log files and other data
files that you have created in the installation directory.
- Uninstall the old version. While this is not necessary,
it is recommended unless you need to use both versions.
If you don't uninstall the old version, then both versions
will be available.
- Download and install
the new version.
- Purchase the upgrade license for the new product version.
Minor
Updates
If you are updating from a version earlier
than 6.3.0, you must convert your license to HASP SRM. Contact
WellSight for support.
You can update from Version 6.3.0 or later
without having to upgrade your license. In this case, install
the new product version over the old one. There is no need
to uninstall the old version. |
Network Support
Can I run WellSight
products over a network? |
STAR.LOG
6.3.0+
Log Manager 6.3.0+
2009-04-24 |
Yes.
Any of the STAR.LOG 6 products and the WellSight Log
Manager can be run over a network using a network license.
The license allows a maximum number of workstations to use
the product at one time. This licensing method is sometimes
referred to as "floating seat" licensing because
a single license can "float" from one workstation
to another. This affords a greater level of flexibility
for your corporation and requires fewer licenses to enable
all of your users.

Network
Server Installation
- Install the product on the license server, selecting
the Network setup type.
- Obtain a network license from WellSight
using the same procedure as for stand-alone licenses,
except specifying that you require a network license and
for how many floating seats.
- Optional: use the Admin Control
Center to configure which clients can access this
server.
- Ensure that the program runs correctly directly on the
server before installing it on network client workstations.
Network Client Installation
- Install the product on the client workstation, selecting
the Network setup type.
- No license or further configuration
is required as long as the client workstation can access
the network license server.
- Optional: use the Admin Control
Center to configure which server(s) this client can
access.
Tip: You can replicate the
configuration to several client workstations.
Notes:
- Any computer on your network that is running a supported
version of Windows can be the network license server.
- A network license server requires a special network
license from WellSight.
- The network license can be either a red
USB network hardware key or an electronic license.
- The network license server can be a Virtual
Machine, but only when using a network hardware key.
- There can be more than one network license server.
In which case, you can configure
which workstations use which network license server, or
you can allow the WellSight program(s) to automatically
locate a server at run-time.
- You can use the Admin Control
Center to configure and manage servers and clients.

What's the
difference between a Local / Trial setup and a Network setup? |
STAR.LOG
6.3.0+
Log Manager 6.3.0+
2009-04-24 |
The
main difference between a Local / Trial setup and a Network
setup is that the Local / Trial setup installs a trial license
whereas the Network setup does not. This distinction was
made to avoid the confusion that a trial would cause when
verifying a network installation. If your clients install
a Local /Trial setup, the WellSight program may activate
the trial and use it until it expires before accessing the
network license. Use the Admin
Control Center to verify whether a particular client
workstation is using a Local / Trial license or a Network
license. |

How do I find
a printer to print logs? |
All Products
All Versions
Updated: 2013-01-24 |
When
shopping for a printer to use with your WellSight Systems
product, take the following into consideration:
- Do you require continuous feed (either tractor feed
or pressure feed)?
- What is the maximum length of log you will be printing
(some printers support continuous feed printing, but with
a maximum number of pages)?
- Do you require color?
- Will you also be using the printer to print black and
white documents? If so, look for a printer that has a
separate black ink cartridge to reduce operating costs.
- Will you be moving the printer around a lot, e.g. to
the field? If so, be sure that the printer is rugged enough.
- Before you buy, try it out. Take your notebook computer
or a copy of the software to the store and try printing
a sample log. Check for the speed, noise, ruggedness,
and quality of output.
- Do not automatically buy the cheapest printer. First
determine what the operating costs will be, particularly
ink cartridges.
- Be sure the printer has drivers for your version of
Windows. You can download the latest driver from the manufacturer's
website.

general purpose desktop printers currently available
from the name brand manufacturers (Canon, Dell, Epson,
HP, Lexmark) that support continuous feed printing.
Special-purpose log printers are available (see the

How do I print

If
you are having trouble getting your log to print continuously
with no break between pages, check the printer setup for
"scaling", "page length" or "margin"
settings. Be sure that the page length is 11" and the
top and bottom margins are zero, or as close as possible
to zero. Set scaling to "none" or "100%".
Some printers require you to choose "banner" mode
both in the printer setup dialog and on the printer itself. |

problems printing a log file. |

Updated: 2010-07-09 |
Printing
problems are almost always caused by system configuration
problems. Please go through the following suggestions to
help identify the source of the problem. Each bulleted item
is a complete suggestion. Try printing again after each
suggestion.
- If you are using a plotter (e.g. an HP DesignJet) you
will need to use the WellSight Log Manager in order to
plot your log.
- If you are having trouble getting your log to print
continuously with no break between pages view
this FAQ.
- If you are trying to print a horizontal log, verify
whether you can print a vertical log.
- Turn your computer and printer off for a minute then
turn them on.
- Exit all programs except for WellSight's.
- Update to the latest printer driver from the printer
manufacturer's web site.
- See if you can print:
- anything from a standard Windows program (e.g.
Notepad, Paint)
- other log files (e.g. one of WSI's sample logs)
- to another printer
- to the same printer from another computer
- at a different quality or dots-per-inch resolution
- with color turned on or off
- your log file with an earlier version of WSI's program
- Try different printer emulation modes if your printer
supports them
On older windows versions (XP, 2000) you may need to try
the following:
- Check for disk space on your system disk (the disk where
your Windows or WinNT folder is - usually C:). Large logs
can temporarily require 100 MB or more of disk space to
print.
- Turn off spooling. Open Start Menu|Settings|Printers
or Start Menu|Printers and Faxes, select your printer,
and choose File Menu|Properties. On the
Details or Advanced tab under Spool
Settings choose Print directly to printer.

Can I print
logs on a plotter? |
Log Manager
Version 6.2d and later
Updated: 2010-08-02 |
The
WellSight Log Manager supports
plotting to HP DesignJet and compatible plotters. The plotter
must accept data in HP-RTL format. This is a subset of the
HP-GL format and is supported by HP DesignJet plotters as
well as some other makes of plotter..
The plotting feature bypasses the Windows driver for the
plotter. This is necessary to get around the page size limitations.
As a result, the settings in the driver do not affect log
plotting (e.g. margins, rotation, scaling, color control,
print quality). However, you can control many of these settings
directly on the control panel of most plotters. |
How can I edit
the Geological Lexicon in Windows Vista? |
STAR.LOG
V6
Updated: 2013-02-02 |
Windows
Vista does not allow you to save files in the Program Files
folder unless you are running Notepad with Administrator
Privileges. Even if you are logged in as an Administrator,
Notepad must be explicitly launched to have Administrator
rights.
To do this, browse to the WellSight installation folder
(usually C:\Program Files\WellSight Systems"). Right
click on ABBREV.TXT and choose "Run as Administrator"
from the pop-up menu. Now you will be able to edit and save
your abbreviations.
2008-10-28 Update: As of Version 6.2h this file is now
installed in a location that can be modified by users with
standard privileges.
- For Windows Vista & Windows 7 & Windows 8: C:\ProgramData\WellSight
Systems
- For earlier Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\WellSight

How can I create
a zero reference line in my curve track? |
STAR.LOG
All Versions
2006-12-21 |
It
is easy to add a reference line in your curve track at zero
or any other value for that matter. Simply add a curve in
Layout Designer with no units and a space character for
its name, i.e. " ". Now Edit Curve Data, select
the new (unnamed) curve and click Power Edit. Specify your
log's entire depth range and set the value to zero (or whatever).
You may need to adjust the curve scale for the reference
line and you can edit the line's thickness, color and other
properties as needed. |
How
can I display all the legends and scales for 10 curves in
a Curve Track? |
STAR.LOG
All Versions
2006-12-21 |
Currently,
only the first 7 curves can be displayed correctly in the
legend of the Track Header. This is a limitation that will
be remedied in a future release. In HORIZONTAL.LOG, a work-around
for this problem that may work for you is to make the track
wider.
A similar problem in HORIZONTAL.LOG is that if you have
too many curves with separate scales, the scale names and
values will overlap. If all the curves have the same scale,
the solution is to use one set of scales for all curves.
In Layout Designer, uncheck "Separate Scales"
for the Curve Layer. |

Log Manager 6
Updated: 2009-10-01 |
You
can create a PDF file of your strip log using Adobe
Acrobat. (WellSight has tested Acrobat versions 5 and
7. Other versions may also work.)
To create a PDF document:
- In STAR.LOG, select File Menu > Print
- Choose the Acrobat Distiller "printer".
- Set the page width to suit your log (e.g. 8.5x11, 11x17,
or custom). Note that the page length does not need to
be the length of your log. In fact, keeping the page length
to a standard length like 11" or 17" will ensure
that your PDF document can be printed on most printers.
- You may also need to ensure that the fonts are included
in the PDF. In Acrobat 7, open the Adobe PDF Document
Properties dialog (via Print Setup) and make the following
settings:
- On the Paper/Quality tab click Advanced
- Under Graphic > Image Color Management set
TrueType Font = Download as Softfont
- Under Document Options > PostScript Options
set TrueType Font Download Option = Bitmap
- On the Adobe PDF Settings tab
- Uncheck "Do not send fonts to "Adobe
PDF"
- Print the document. You will be prompted for a file
name for the PDF file.
To print the PDF file:
- Open the PDF file in either Adobe Acrobat or in the
free Adobe
Reader.
- Select the printer you wish to use. Configure
it to print continuously (e.g. choose banner mode).
- Ensure that any print settings that would Scale, Shrink,
Expand, Rotate, or Center your printout are disabled.
- Print.
Note: While all PDF drivers should work correctly with
WellSight programs, we are not able to offer support for
PDF drivers other than Adobe. |
